SKAT Tests

At CCNY, the CUNY-mandated entrance exams are called SKAT tests (for Skills Assessment Tests). All matriculating students entering the CUNY system, except second-degree students, are required to take these exams, which measure skills in math, reading English, and writing English. Entering high school students are expected to pass all three tests; if you do not, you will not be allowed to enter a senior college but must begin in a community college. Transfer students who do not pass all tests will be allowed one year (two semesters) in which to pass the tests; if you do not, you will be dismissed from City College. Such students will be allowed to appeal the dismissal; if the appeal is granted, they will be allowed one more semester in which to pass the tests. To continue in CUNY, students who have encountered final SKAT-dismissal will be required to take a one-semester immersion course in one of a few selected CUNY community colleges; during that semester the student will study only English and nothing else.

Emphasis is placed on English because math requirements are less stringent and typically pose few problems for students contemplating an engineering career. The CCNY SKAT test, however, adds 40 questions to the CUNY exam, so it is not uncommon for engineering students to pass the test but still be required to take "remedial" (i.e., precalculus) math courses. The best preparation for the test is not to study calculus, which the test does not cover, but to go over precalculus material such as trigonometry and intermediate and advanced algebra.

Special Programs

The Office of Student Programs in the School of Engineering offers many forms of assistance to students. The two major programs are PRES, for entering high school students (primarily, minority students); and TRACC, for entering transfer students. Both programs offer tutoring, enrichment courses, counseling, study spaces, etc. If you are interested, contact the Office of Student Programs as soon as you're admitted.
