Advising
Systems
The
faculty advisor is responsible of advising the student and monitoring
the student's progress so as to ensure that the student satisfies
all requirements of the program. During the senior year, the faculty
advisor works closely with the Department Chair and the SOE (School
of Engineering) Office of Undergraduate Affairs to ensure that the
student has followed the prescribed curriculum.
Throughout
the course of their study, all students are provided with a copy
of The City College of New York Undergraduate Bulletin. All electrical
engineering students are also provided with the EE Curriculum sheet.
This showcase curriculum shows the courses that a student should
take each semester, as well as the prerequisites that are required
to enroll in a course.
EE students
are required to see their academic advisor at least once each semester
for advice in the selection of elective courses, for help in determining
career goals and objectives, to discuss progress toward achieving
EE program educational objectives, and to obtain a registration
authorization form. With the help of the advisor, the student selects
electives from courses listed in both The City College of New York
Undergraduate Bulletin and the CCNY Course Schedule for a particular
semester.
Any
deviation from the stated curriculum must be approved by a process
that begins with approval by the student's academic advisor and
follows with approval by the Department Chair and the SOE (School
of Engineering) Dean of Undergraduate Affairs. Once approved, it
goes to the SOE Office of Undergraduate Affairs representative (Higher
Education Officer) where it is accepted if it meets university standards.
It is not the policy of the Electrical Engineering Department to
approve substitutions for required courses in the program unless
there is some overwhelming justification to do so.
A registration
authorization card, signed by the advisor, is required and should
be turned in to the SOE Office of Undergraduate Affairs representative
(Higher Education Officer). Students unable to meet their assigned
advisors because of time conflicts can seek the assistance of the
Department registration advisors, the Department Chair, his designated
substitute (Higher Education Officer), or another faculty member.
In any case, the faculty member so consulted or the Department Chair
turns in his recommendation to the SOE Office of Undergraduate Affairs
representative (Higher Education Officer) who places the information
in the student's folder. This process guarantees that all registered
students have sought the advice of either the designated faculty
advisor or a substitute advisor.
