The School
of Engineering welcomes transfer students from all over the world,
and invites you to investigate our TRACC program (Transfer Recruitment
and Achievement at City College). For more information on TRACC,
contact the School of Engineering Office
of Student Programs (Room: 2M7).
From
other CUNY colleges. Graduates of CUNY community colleges are automatically
eligible to enter City College and will receive at least 64 transfer
credits, although it is possible that not all credits will apply
to the degree. Community college students who wish to enter CCNYbefore
graduation must have spent at least two full semesters (one year)
at the community college and have a minimum GPA of 2.0. Students
from a CUNY senior college may transfer to CCNY at any time. In
all cases, normal admission procedures must be followed; contact
CCNY Admissions for full information. In terms of CUNY entrance
exams, we will accept your previous reading and writing scores but
you will have to retake the math test. (The reason is that CCNY
takes the standard CUNY math test and adds 40 questions.) In terms
of transfer creditevaluation, refer to Transfer Credit Evaluation;
however, we have developed a CUNY transfer guide listing the basic
engineering core courses at City plus equivalent courses at the
16 other CUNY institutions. If you're hoping for an engineering
education at City, and you're currently attending or planning to
attend another CUNY college, this sheet should be most helpful.
From
non-CUNY colleges. Admission criteria vary with total number of
credits, GPA, and math/science courses. At the extremes: with fewer
than 14 credits and no advanced math/science courses, a GPA of 3.0
is required; with 24 or more credits plus a year of calculus plus
at least one semester of college-level chemistry or physics, a GPA
of 2.0 is acceptable. For complete information, refer to CCNY Admissions.
A sealed
transcript must be sent from all of your previous colleges for you
to be considered for admission as a transfer student to the address
listed on the application form. (Under certain circumstances, CCNY
Admissions will accept official transcripts hand-carried by the
student in a sealed envelope.) If the transcript does not list grades,
a "marks" sheet will also be required. For transcripts
in a language other than English, you will need to provide an English
translation by a certified translator.
All transfer
students from a non-CUNY college must take all three CUNY entrance
exams (see SKAT Tests). Students from non-English-speaking countries
must also pass the TOEFL exam; minimum passing score is 500. Students
who do not pass TOEFL will not be admitted to any senior CUNY college,
but will be allowed to take intensive English courses at certain
CUNY community colleges.
Transfer
credit evaluation. Official transfer credit evaluation is performed
by CCNY Admissions personnel, who evaluate standard and core courses.
For technical courses, a copy of the transcript is sent to a department
evaluator, who evaluates the technical courses and sends the results
to Admissions for inclusion in the final document. You will receive
an official transfer credit evaluation during your first semester
here. For disputed or unusual courses, Admissions may ask you to
supply a description of the course in question.
Transfer
credits and residency requirements. No matter how many transfer
credits you are awarded, you must take a minimum number of credits
in your major at City to obtain an engineering degree. Specifically,
60% of major credits must be taken here, which works out as follows:
Electrical
Engineering - 36 credits
Even
if you can meet all course requirements with fewer than the listed
credits, you must still meet residency requirements. For students
with many transfer credits in their major, this may mean taking
"extra" courses. Beyond these requirements, there is no
limit to the number of transfer credits City College will accept
toward your degree.
Evaluation
System and Guidelines
Transfer
students are not required to take the CCNY Placement Test. Their
transcripts are first evaluated by the EE Higher Education Officer
two weeks prior to the time of the student’s first registration.
A more detailed evaluation of the student’s transcript occurs
during his/her first semester at the City College and is performed
by the EE faculty transfer advisor and EE Higher Education Officer.
The
evaluation of performance of an enrolled student is an ongoing process
that continues until graduation. The faculty member teaching a course
in which the student is enrolled is responsible for evaluating the
student's performance in the course in question. This evaluation
may involve homework, class participation, report generation, project
completion, quizzes, and examinations. The faculty member teaching
the course is responsible for assigning the final grade at the completion
of the course.
